Raghuvaran!!

Raghuvaran : One of the most charismatic actors of the Tamil screen inspite of his dreaded psychopathic antagonist roles.

My favourite actor.

Way back in 1997, I happened to be part of a state-level inter-collegiate programme (sadly, but among the audience) in 'The American College,' Madurai, with my childhood friends Britto Rajesh and Philip Ilango. Seated next to us in the auditorium, was a very beautiful girl, poised with crossed legs, dressed up way high for those days of Madurai; a girl, any guy would have rarely missed giving a second glance.

'As you like it' - performed by various colleges on stage. Except for our girl, the whole crowd was energized with the dance, comedies and what-not performances by the young blood on the dais and were clapping and screaming around.

But at the end of a dance performance of a guy for a Michael Jackson song (Beat it!), our girl clapped mildly, with the same poise, with the lower hand on her lap. I resented the girl who appreciated the western number but rejected the flavours of the soil.

Then came a mimicry performance. The guy mimicked all actors of the Tamil film industry from yesteryear actors, through Rajinikanth, Kamal, till the contemporary, Karthik and others. The girl who was silent all the way, raised her hands and clapped out loud when the guy on the stage mimicked my dear old Raghuvaran.

There, rarely would be any Tamilian, who has watched his movies but not liked him.

Interestingly, the character's name, he portrayed, in his first movie, 'Ezhavathu Manithan,' happened to be, Anand.
